Malnourished horses arrive at sanctuary

by Wayne S. Geiger

Fall 2008

Full body photograph of starving horse.
This is one of two that horses came to us 200 pounds underweight. Please help them by donating to the Molly Medical Fund.

Working in cooperation with Linn County Sheriff Department, two starving horses from Robinson Drive in Scio arrived safely at the Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary to begin their long road to recovery.

Assuming there are no other medical or health problems or complications as identified by our veterinarian, Dr. Terry Gerros, the horses should be able to recover. Both horses appear to be responding to the care they are now receiving.

Once put in their freshly bedded stalls, they immediately began eating a light diet of grass hay to recover slowly from their appalling physical condition.

On August 6, 2008, reports of several starving horses surfaced involving a small pasture containing nothing but dried stubble and weeds.

The Linn County Sheriff Department served a Search and Seizure Warrant to the owner on August 9, 2008.

Two of the horses arrived at the Sanctuary and one was returned to a previous owner.
The horses will be held in foster care until the case is resolved. During this time the horses will be rehabilitated under the direction of the sanctuary’s veterinarian and cared for by the sanctuary’s volunteer staff.

For more information about the horses or any other animals residing at the sanctuary, call 503-394-4486 or check out the website: www.lighthousefarmsanctuary.org.
